Step 4: Urgent placements (connected person pathway)

This pathway applies when a child needs to be, or becomes, looked after by the local authority. This may happen when there are concerns about the child's safety or when they can no longer remain in their current care arrangement.

If the child needs to move quickly, they may be placed with a relative, friend or another person they know and trust. This is known as a connected person placement.

What to expect

• The child may come to live with you at short notice.
• You may be temporarily approved as a kinship foster carer.
• This allows the child to stay with someone they know while longer-term plans are considered.
• A social worker will support you and explain what happens next.

During this time:

• A full assessment will be carried out.
• You'll receive regular visits and support from Children's Services.
• Financial support and fostering allowances may be available, depending on your circumstances.
• We'll work with you to understand the child's needs and plan for their future.

Timescales

• Temporary approval can last up to 16 weeks
• In some circumstances, this period  may be extended
