A child comes to live with you
Every situation is different. Sometimes arrangements happen very quickly, and other times they develop over time. You may not go through every step, and we'll be there to support you throughout the process.
The start of a kinship journey can feel fast-moving and overwhelming, but you won't be on your own. We'll keep you informed about what's happening and make sure you know where to get help and support at every stage. If you're unsure about anything, you can speak to your social worker, if you have one, or contact the Kinship Team or Children's Services. We're here to listen, answer your questions, and help you understand what comes next.
Step 1: A child comes to live with you (first few days)
This may happen suddenly, often because there are concerns about a child's safety and wellbeing.
What to expect
- Immediate decisions are made to keep the child safe
- You may be asked to care for the child at short notice
- Initial plans will be put in place to support the child and help them settle in
When we are involved:
- A social worker will speak with you and the child to offer support, gather information, and explain what will happen next.
- We'll work with you to make early plans for the child's care and support
- If the child is looked after, we'll share their care plan with you so you understand what support is available and what is expected.
You may have lots of questions at this stage, and that's completely understandable. We'll keep you informed and make sure you know who to contact for advice and support.
