Most children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can get the help they need in a mainstream school.

Specialist settings

Some children and young people need a more specialist setting to meet their needs. There are different type of specialist settings, including:

• mainstream schools with resource bases or SEND units
• special schools

These schools are for children and young people who:

• are going through an education, health and care (EHC) needs assessment, or
• have an education, health and care plan (EHCP)
