Project timeline and refurbishment works

Why refurbishment is needed

The footbridge is approaching the end of its serviceable life and requires essential maintenance works to remain safe and operational.

Inspections have identified deterioration of several bridge elements, including concrete defects, cracking and corrosion. The planned works will repair these issues and help extend the structure's lifespan.

Bridge closure dates and duration

The current programme indicates that work is expected to begin on 19 October 2026. The programme remains subject to change due to external approvals and railway-related requirements.

The bridge is expected to remain closed until approximately April 2027 whilst refurbishment works are undertaken.

Why the project did not start during summer 2026

The start of the refurbishment was postponed following the findings of the ecological assessment, which identified the need for further ecological surveys and measures relating to protected species. The timing also needed to take account of ecological constraints, including the bird nesting season.

The programme was therefore revised to allow the necessary ecological requirements to be addressed before the main construction works commenced.

Why the work will take several months

This maintenance project involves extensive structural repairs, replacement works, corrosion treatment, repainting, and activities that require coordination with Network Rail.

Some works are dependent on railway possessions, specialist contractors and weather-sensitive operations. The programme has been developed to achieve the works safely and efficiently.

Opportunities to reduce the programme

The project team has reviewed opportunities to shorten the duration of the works and will continue to do so. However, railway access requirements, safety considerations, specialist construction activities and external approvals significantly limit the ability to accelerate the programme.

Project risks

Key risks include:

  • Discovery of more extensive deterioration once repair works commence.
  • Approval requirements from Network Rail and Southern Gas Networks (SGN).
  • Availability of railway possessions.
  • Utility constraints.
  • Potential programme delays arising from external interfaces.
