Early Years Portage Service
About the Early Years Portage Service
Early Years Portage is an education service for children under 4 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
We work with parents and carers to support children’s learning and development. Our support is family‑focused and based on proven teaching approaches.
Our aims are to:
- help children and families have a good quality of life and positive experiences
- create a safe space where families and children can learn and play together
- help families feel welcomed and included in their local community
Who the service is for
We support children who:
- are under 4 years old
- live in Wokingham Borough
- have a significant developmental delay of 6 months or more in 2 or more areas of development
- have a delay in cognition and learning as one of these areas
How we can help
Our practitioners are qualified in special educational needs and have specialist Portage training.
We offer:
- home visits
- stay and play support groups
We can support you by:
- sharing strategies to support your child’s development
- showing you play and learning activities to use at home
- helping you understand SEND processes
- supporting you plan your child’s move to nursery or school

How to access
You need a referral to access this service.
Referrals are made through the Early Years Support Panel, which meets once a month.
There are 2 ways to refer:
- as a parent, you can refer your child yourself
- with your permission, a professional working with your child can refer
