Which Ofsted register to join

Childminders must be registered with Ofsted in order to look after children under the age of 8 years old.

The register you need to join depends on the age of the children you care for:

  • Children from birth to the end of the reception year: Early Years Register and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework
  • Children aged 5 to 7 years: Compulsory part of the Childcare Register
  • Children aged 8 years and over: You may choose to register on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register, although this is not mandatory

You can find more information on the early years register and childcare register can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Exempt from registering with Ofsted

If a child carer provides care where a child does not stay with them for more than two hours a day, even if the childcare service is open for longer than two hours then the provider is not required to register with Ofsted.

For further information, read the early years and childcare registration handbook on the GOV.UK website.
