Travelling to school – What you need to know before applying

Before submitting an application for an in-year school place, it’s important to consider how your child will travel to and from school. Most families are not eligible for free transport assistance, and it is your responsibility to ensure your child can travel safely and reliably each day. Parents should note that admission authorities cannot prioritise families based on logistical challenges they may face getting their children to school.

Eligibility for Travel Assistance

You will not be eligible for travel assistance if your child is not attending their nearest suitable school

The nearest suitable school is defined as:

The physically nearest qualifying school with an available place that provides education appropriate to your child’s age, ability, and aptitude, including any special educational needs or disabilities (SEND)

This may include schools located outside Wokingham Borough, such as those in:

  • Reading
  • Bracknell Forest
  • Hampshire

Strict Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for travel assistance is determined by strict criteria set out in the Home to School Transport Policy.
These criteria are based on:

  • The distance from home to the nearest suitable school
  • The child’s age and educational needs
  • Whether the route is considered safe for walking
  • Any SEND or mobility issues

If your child attends a school that is not the nearest suitable option, you will be responsible for arranging and funding their travel.
