You may spot a team working at Ashenbury Park in Woodley next week as we replace more than 20 gas monitoring wells around the site.

The work will take place from 9 to 13 November, with a small site compound set up in the car park while it is carried out.

Most of the wells go about 5m to 10m underground and allow us to monitor gas levels below the surface. Once the new wells are installed, you may notice their small, mushroom-shaped caps around the park.

We’re required to monitor air and water quality at Ashenbury Park because parts of the site were previously used for landfill.

History of the site

The land was originally farmland before gravel extraction began, probably in the 1930s.

As the workings expanded during the late 1950s and 1960s, earlier pits were filled with rubbish and the area became the old Woodley rubbish tip. The land was later reclaimed to create the park people use today.

Separately, we’re currently considering feedback on proposals for car parking at Ashenbury Park and will share a further update when we can.
