Courier fraud
Organised scam using victim manipulation and staged financial investigations
Usually where criminals call the victim and pretend to be a Police officer, or their bank. They tell the victim there is a corrupt employee at their bank and ask the victim to help with their investigation but to keep it a secret. A taxi is arranged to pick the victim up and take them to the bank immediately (the Taxi Driver often has no idea what is happening).
The victim can be told to keep their phone open with their mobile phone in their pocket so the fraudster can hear what the cashier is saying. The victim is prepped in advance on what to tell the cashier and say the money they want to withdraw is for a deposit for a car for example or gift for their grandson for example.
The victim is told to hand the cash to an “Undercover detective” who is waiting either outside or will attend the victims house shortly. Victims are told they will get their money back when the “corrupt” employee is caught or when the investigation is over - but this is a lie.
If you are aware this is happening now and in progress call 999 immediately.
