General fraud

Overview

Fraud that is not against the Council should be reported to Action Fraud who are an organisation who take fraud reports then disseminate them to National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), where reports are triaged and sent out to be investigated where appropriate to the relevant authority.  This could be the local Police Force where the fraud took place, or the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) or National Crime Agency (NCA) for very serious levels of fraud.

Victims of fraud are often targeted again as organised crime groups employ fraudsters, share information, and buy and sell victim information. Victims are put on what they call a “suckers list” which is sold and shared because they know fraud victims are likely to fall for follow up scams.
