Housing help for care leavers
Housing help
We’re here to support you in finding a place to live where you feel safe, settled and comfortable. We know everyone’s situation is different, so we’ll always listen and take things at a pace that works for you.
If you’re 16 - 17
Right now, you might be living with a foster carer, residential home, supported lodgings or in supported accommodation (such as a semi-independent arrangement). Wherever you are, what matters most is that you feel cared for and supported. This is a time for getting settled, building confidence and knowing there are people around you who’ve got your back.
When you turn 18
When you turn 18, you may be able to stay living with your foster carer through something called ‘Staying Put’. This is always talked through together with you, your foster carer and your team. This allows you to gradually transition to becoming an adult.
You would need to pay some rent and help out with bills, but this is usually covered through housing benefits or your wages. Your Social Worker and Personal Advisor will explain everything clearly and help you work out what feels manageable for you.
If you’re over 18
As you move forward, we’ll help you find a place that suits you and support you along the way. Your Personal Advisor will be there to help you to explore what your housing pathway may look like and help you work towards finding what is right for you. This will include social housing, private rented, houses of multiple occupancy (HMO/transitional accommodation). Your PA will listen, guide you and help with any questions or worries that come up.
“I was unaware that I would be able to get stable, safe accommodation until I was older. It is imperative that care leavers understand their rights to housing from age 18.”
- Muhammad, Care Leaver
