After your kinship assessment
Once your assessment is complete, we will explain the outcome and talk you through what happens next.
We know waiting for decisions can feel stressful. Our aim is to make the process clear and help you understand what support may be available to you and the child in your care.
Understanding the outcome
We will explain:
- the outcome of the assessment
- what support has been agreed, if any
- the reasons for any decisions
- what happens next
If support is needed, we will work with you to create a support plan.
Your support plan
Your support plan sets out what support will be provided and how it will help meet your family's needs.
The plan will:
- explain what support will be provided
- set out who is responsible for providing it
- include timescales and next steps
You will:
- have the opportunity to read and comment on the plan
- receive a copy of the plan
- know who your main contact is
Support available
If you are approved as a formal kinship carer, you may be able to access support such as:
- financial support to help with caring for the child
- information about local kinship support groups
- advice and guidance
- support from a social worker
- training and other services to help you in your caring role
The support available will depend on your circumstances and the needs of the child.
Reviews and ongoing support
Support is reviewed regularly to make sure it continues to meet the needs of you and the child.
Typical review times are:
- Early Help or Child in Need support: every 6 weeks
- Looked after children: in line with statutory review requirements
- Special Guardianship Order (SGO) and ongoing support: as agreed
- Financial support: usually once a year
Support can change if your circumstances or needs change.
