Family Group Conferences (FGCs)

A Family Group Conference (FGC) is a more formal type of family meeting. It may be offered through our Family Group Conference service when important decisions need to be made about a child's future.

This might be when:

• there are concerns about the child's safety or wellbeing
• longer-term care arrangements are being considered
• significant decisions need to be made about the child's future

One of the key features of a Family Group Conference is that families are given private time to talk and create their own plan. The plan is then shared with professionals and agreed together.

Why family meetings matter

Family meetings can help bring people together around the child and make sure everyone is working towards the same goals.

They can:

• build on the strengths within your family network
• create clear plans and shared understanding
• identify practical and emotional support
• reduce pressure on you as a carer

You are not expected to manage everything on your own. The people around you can play an important role in helping both you and the child feel supported.
