Understanding tenancy and licence agreements
Signing an agreement to live in your home
When you move into a new home, you may need to sign something called an agreement.
An agreement is a written document that says you are allowed to live there.
There are different types of agreements depending on where you live.
Don’t worry we, or someone who speaks for you, will help you understand and sign any agreements you need.
Types of Agreements: Tenancy or licence
You will have one of these two types of agreement:
Tenancy Agreement
- You rent the home and have more rights.
- You can stay for a set time, usually 6 months or more.
- The landlord must follow rules if they want you to leave.
Licence Agreement
- You live in the home but have fewer rights.
- You might share the home with other people or live in supported housing.
- You can be asked to leave more easily.
We will help you understand which agreement you have and what it means for you.
