Falls prevention and recovery

Help to stay, strong, steady and independent.

  • Have you had a fall?
  • Do you feel unsteady on your feet?
  • Are you worried about losing your balance?

Falls are not a normal part of getting older. Taking action early can help you stay active, confident and independent.

Who is more likely to fall?

Anyone can have a fall, but some people have a higher risk. This can include:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • People aged 50 to 64 who have things that may increase their risk, such as:
    • Frailty
    • Long-term health conditions
    • Taking more than four prescription medicines
    • Health problems that affect balance, strength or mobility
    • Having had a previous fall

Being more at risk does not mean you will definitely fall. But knowing what can increase your risk can help you take steps to stay safe.

Why falls matter

A fall can lead to:

  • Injury and hospital admission
  • Loss of confidence
  • Reduced mobility and independence
  • Fear of future falls
  • Social isolation

The good news is that many falls can be prevented. Exercise, support and small changes at home can all make a difference.

How to help prevent falls

Staying active and doing regular exercise can help improve your:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Coordination
  • Confidence

Make your home safer

  • Remove loose rugs and trip hazards
  • Ensure good lighting throughout your home
  • Use handrails where needed
  • Wear supportive footwear

Look after your health

  • Have regular eyesight and hearing checks
  • Ask your GP or pharmacist to review your medicines
  • Stay hydrated and eat well

If you have had a fall recently

If you have fallen, or you are worried about falling, speak to your GP. They can check what may be increasing your risk and help you get the right support.

Your GP may arrange a frailty assessment. If needed, they can also refer you to services that can help you stay steady on your feet and reduce your risk of falls.

A health review can help check for things such as:

  • Medication side effects
  • Balance problems
  • Vision issues
  • Long-term health conditions
