Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) explained for you and your family

Everyone should feel safe and respected and supported. Sometimes, rules are needed to protect people who may not be able to make certain decisions about their care. These rules are not about taking away your freedom, they are there to keep you safe and make sure your rights are protected.

This is why we have something called Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). It makes sure any limits on freedom are fair, necessary, and in your best interests.

Here's what you need to know:

You have rights

You have the right to make choices about your life, and we respect those choices.

Why are there rules?

Rules are in place to keep you safe, healthy and comfortable. They are not meant to take away your freedom.

Your voice matters

If you don’t like something or have questions, or if something doesn't feel right, please speak to staff or your family. We will listen and work with you.

Keeping everyone safe

Some rules help protect everyone, like wearing seatbelts or staying in certain areas. These are for health and safety.

You are not alone

We care about your wellbeing and want you to feel respected and supported at all times.

How is people’s freedom protected?

Sometimes, to keep people safe, their freedom may need to be limited. When this happens, professionals must follow a legal process called Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).
