Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) explained for you and your family

Everyone should feel safe, respected and supported. Sometimes, rules are needed to protect people who may not be able to make certain decisions about their care. These rules are not about taking away your freedom, they are there to keep you safe and make sure your rights are protected.

This is why we have something called Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). It makes sure any limits on freedom are fair, necessary, and in your best interests.

Here's what you need to know:

You have rights

You have the right to make choices about your life, and we respect those choices.

Why are there rules?

Rules exist to keep you and everyone else safe, healthy, and comfortable. Some rules, like wearing seatbelts or staying in certain areas, help protect everyone.

You are not alone - your voice matters

We’re here for you. If something feels wrong or you have questions, talk to us or your family. We’ll listen and help

How is people’s freedom protected?

Sometimes, to keep people safe, their freedom may need to be limited. When this happens, professionals must follow a legal process called Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).
