Advice about fly-tipping

You are responsible for your waste

Whether you are a householder or a business, you must ensure that any waste you produce is disposed of properly without endangering health or harming the environment.

Advice for householders

To ensure you are disposing of your waste correctly:

Your responsibility when hiring a waste removal contractor

As a householder, you must take reasonable steps to check that anyone you use to remove waste from your property is authorised to do so.

Ask any waste carrier to:

  • Provide you with their full address and telephone number
  • Show you their waste carrier licence - if they don't have one, don't use them
  • Tell you where your waste will be taken to - it must be a licensed waste disposal site

Advice for Landowners

If you are responsible for land or are a private landowner, you can take a few practical steps to reduce the risk of fly- tipping on your land.

  • Install gates, barriers, or fencing where possible, especially at vehicle access points
  • Lock gates when the land is not in use
  • Consider earth bunds, large stones, or planters in vulnerable locations
  • Clear overgrown vegetation where it hides access points or secluded areas
  • Avoid creating hidden or poorly visible areas that attract illegal dumping
  • Clear fly-tipped waste as soon as possible to prevent it being added to
  • Put up signs stating “No Fly-Tipping – CCTV in Operation” or “Private Land”
  • Include details of fines or prosecution where appropriate

Advice for businesses

All businesses have a legal duty to dispose of any waste they produce or transport properly. Read Wokingham Borough Council’s business/commercial waste page for tips on waste collection.

Dumped supermarket trolleys are the responsibility of the relevant supermarket. If you find an abandoned trolley, please report this to the appropriate supermarket for collection.
