California Cross improvements image information

The proposals

  • Shorter right-angled crossing points at periphery of the main junction to improve crossing provision in the area for people with disabilities and/or accessibility issues such as those with visual impairment. In addition, the patterned crossing will encourage drivers to give way (4 locations).
  • Curved shaped crossings will allow pedestrian to move more directly and patterned markings will encourage drivers to give way to pedestrians (5 locations).
  • Central refuge provided for central crossing point.
  • 3 locations provided for seating, resting, and socialising.
  • Footpath around the petrol statin forecourt to be paved in contrasting material, to give  strong pedestrian priority around the petrol station, and to narrow the appearance of the carriageway to encourage slow vehicle movements.
  • Targeted vegetation removal, so pedestrians can move more directly around the junction.
  • Direction of vehicle travel revised to reduce congestion.
  • Prioritised pedestrian space where pedestrians have priority over vehicular traffic. This will encourage slower speeds to and from the car park and provide more space for pedestrians to travel (2 locations).
  • Bollards provided to prohibit vehicle access (3 locations).
  • Vehicle access retained as access for shop servicing, property parking, and disabled parking.
  • Parking removed to reduce the traffic volumes using the service access mentioned above and improve the pedestrian environment and movement.
  • Totems gateway markers will inform drivers that they are entering a village centre which will encourage them to reduce their speeds and give way to pedestrians at the crossing points (4 locations).
  • Access retained but shared with crossing point to allow pedestrians to make a more direct movement around the junction.
  • On the road surface a leaf pattern is proposed to make the area feel less vehicle orientated and encourage the drivers to move slowly through the area. Traditional road markings intentionally omitted to encourage caution and negotiation between  all road users and slow vehicles.
