Working group aims to improve access at Twyford Station

A cross-party working group met for the first time this week (Tuesday 24 March) to support Wokingham Borough Council’s focus on improving access to Twyford Station.

Passenger numbers at the station continue to grow and are now higher than pre-pandemic levels. 

Twyford Station has limited access by bus and by cycle from some directions and demand for car parking significantly exceeds the available spaces on weekdays.

In September 2025, Cllr Adiran Betteridge, the council’s executive member for active travel, transport and highways, committed the council to work with Great Western Railway (GWR) and other stakeholders to seek near-term and longer-term proposals for improvement across all modes of travel.

Cllr Betteridge said: “Easy access to rail stations in the borough, however you travel, is a priority in our Local Transport Plan. The issues at Twyford have proved difficult to fix over many years, but I am committed to working with partners and the community to do so. Once we have proposals that are robust, we will share these with the public.”

As part of the council’s commitment, a working group with members from all political parties on the council has been set up to look at car parking, bus and active travel access and other issues relating to accessing the station.

Cllr Betteridge added: “The first meeting of the working group was an opportunity to update councillors on the work the council is doing. It was very constructive and I look forward to working together for the good of residents and the station’s users.”

The council is continuing to work with GWR and other partners and is committed to keeping local people informed of progress.
