A new community space in Woodley will be a centre for support services and a place for all residents to come together – and we need local people to get involved in creating it.

Funding to convert Woodley Library into a community hub was approved last month and the council will now be working with residents and stakeholders to agree what it should provide to meet local needs. The library will remain but will also house wider services from the council and partners.

The Woodley Hub is the second facility being developed by the council in partnership with the local community, similar to Arborfield Community Hub in Arborfield Green.

Woodley has been selected for the second hub based on local data. It shows that residents in the area have particular needs which could be supported within a community hub space by multiple partners.

Council to set up community steering group

A community steering group will be set up to guide the project, in the same way that the Arborfield Community Hub is being developed. The steering group will include local representatives from Woodley Town Council, community partners and also residents willing to get involved.

Executive member for Resident Services, Inclusion and Fighting Poverty Cllr Rachel Bishop-Firth said: “Woodley is a strong community with a great deal of pride and neighbourhood-spirit, and we believe a community hub there will add huge value.

“We know there is a need for a centre such as this but the details of what it should offer and how to make the best use of the space need to be worked out with local people, which is why we are setting up the steering group and will be engaging widely in the community.”

The Woodley Community Hub is a separate project to the family hub that is to open at the nearby Ambleside Children’s Centre. The projects are being planned together and will be complementary, but the family hub will specifically be for young families. The council will also be engaging with residents on what the family hub will offer.
