Volunteer for independent remuneration panel

Wokingham Borough Council is looking to recruit volunteers to be members of the Independent Remuneration Panel, to consider councillor allowances.
This is an interesting role for anyone who would like to contribute to help shape the working arrangements and allowances for local councillors.
Panel members would be invited to make recommendations to the council regarding the councillor allowances scheme.
Volunteers would be appointed for a period of four years. The first review would take place between September and January 2026 and is likely to require panel members to attend around four meetings, which can be attended in-person at the council offices or remotely. Any expenses incurred to attend meetings will be reimbursed.
The primary role of the panel will be to review and assess the councillor allowances scheme on a biennial basis, which includes the basic allowance for all councillors, the childcare and dependent allowance scheme, and the special responsibility allowances associated with specific roles held by some councillors.
Volunteers cannot be:
- An elected councillor of any local authority
- Employed or appointed by Wokingham Borough Council
- A senior employee (in a politically restricted post) of another local authority
- A holder of any position within a political party at local, regional or national level
- The subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order
- Be convicted in the last five years of an offence with a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of not less than three months without the option of a fine
- In debt to or in dispute with Wokingham Borough Council
- A relative or personal friend of an elected member of Wokingham Borough Council
You can request an application form, as well as further details of the requirements of the appointment and additional background information by contacting the Democratic Services team.
Application forms must be submitted by Friday 4 July.
