Transforming Wokingham station into a modern travel hub
We improved journeys to and from Wokingham station, and on surrounding streets, by changing how traffic flows and building a new link road with extensive measures to encourage sustainable travel.

Before we completed this in 2014, vehicles could travel in both directions along Station Road. However, Station Approach was a dead end with no onward access.
Now Station Road is one-way towards the station from Shute End, while Station Approach has a direct one-way connection to Reading Road after we extended it to create a new junction.
This reduced conflict at the level crossing and simplified traffic flow, allowing quicker access to the station and Reading Road for motorists coming from Wellington Road.
Drivers, taxis and buses can only enter Station Approach from Reading Road to use the car park, which was greatly expanded with a multi-storey facility, and a new purpose-built interchange with dedicated stops, a rank and a drop-off and pickup area.
This is served by the Lion 4/4a between Reading and Bracknell via Wokingham, the Leopard 3 between Reading and Wokingham via villages south of the M4, and other routes linking the town with outlying areas.

Pedestrian and cycling access to the station were improved with better crossing points and links into existing cycle paths, a wider forecourt and much more cycle storage including sheltered spaces.
The station itself was upgraded by Network Rail in 2013, with the old 1970s building demolished and replaced with a larger, more comfortable one including a new passenger footbridge with lifts, making it much more accessible to disabled passengers.
We coordinated our scheme with the station refurbishment, ensuring the best possible benefit and most effective use of resources. Our works were carried out in partnership with Balfour Beatty, and with a share of funding from housing developers.
