Bribery and corruption

Corrupt practices where officials receive bribes influencing council decisions

Bribery and corruption is when Council workers, or anyone working on behalf of the Council accepts a bribe, money or gift and they decide or are persuaded to make a decision that favours a person, business or organisation as a result. 

Examples of bribery: 

  • A Council worker accepts a paid for holiday or hospitality for awarding a contract, or a job to a particular candidate  
  • A Councillor accepts payment from a 3rd party so one particular business is favoured in a bidding process 
  • There is retaliation towards the Council or an individual for not accepting a bribe 
  • A Manager accepts a payment from a business to make a particular decision  
  • A Council worker accepts a gift for a business to increase service provided or to secure future works
