In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act, I would be grateful if you could provide me with the following information:
1. How many streetlights are turned off each night?
The quantities of street lights operating “Part-night” for the last 3 years are as follows:
2020: 2.011 no.
2021: 2,011 no.
2022: 2,010 no.
2. Which roads are impacted by streetlights being turned off?
Please see attached list of streets with part-night lighting
3. What time are streetlights turned off at night, and back on again in the morning?
The majority of the lights switch off “part-night” between 0:30 and 5:30 with some site specific variations (e.g. car parks and greenways)
4. With the information divided by road or council ward (whichever is easiest), what reasons are cited for turning streetlights off at night?
The primary reason stated on our website in all cases is “to save money” however in the case of greenways this is also to reduce the environmental impact on wildlife.
5. Are street lights turned off to save costs on electricity? - if yes, how many streetlights are turned off for this reason?
Yes, all lights that operate “part-night” do so to save money (see quantities stated in response to question 1).
