1. Please can you provide your current policies and procedures as of November 22 about the following:
a) Your current policy on children that are electively home educated, and your current procedures including any template letters used in relation to how you make initial contact with a new home education family, and how you make the decision in relation to if a child's home education received is suitable or not.
In terms of how we make the decision in relation to if a child’s home education is suitable or not, please see the below explanation:
When assessing whether a child’s home education is suitable or not, we take account of the provision in place in terms of subjects/topics studied, resources used, how progress is tracked/monitored, and groups/activities attended for physical development and/or socialisation. We recognise that the provision in place will differ according to a pupil’s age and needs.
If parents choose to meet with us (either in person or virtually), we are able to have a broad conversation to discuss the things in place, asking questions and generally developing a rapport and gaining insight into the provision in place. Parents are usually able to share some samples of their child(ren)’s work at the meeting but if this is not possible, we request that such samples are shared after the meeting, before making a decision as to whether education is suitable.
If parents choose to submit a written report, rather than have a meeting, we will consider the report alongside that provided the previous year (if the child has been home educated for more than a year) to see how provision has changed/the progress made. For written reports, we would want to receive details of the matters set out above (e.g. subjects/topics studied, resources used, how progress is tracked/monitored, and groups/activities attended for physical development and/or socialisation, as well as some samples of work or progress reports) in order to determine whether education is suitable.
For education to be deemed suitable, we would want to see breadth in the subjects and topics studied, a range of resources being used, progress being made, and the child to be engaged in some social activities. We ask to see samples to complement meetings/reports so we can see some examples of the work being undertaken.
