1. How many times per year do you mow your rural road verges, and when?
Two times a year with sightlines cut more frequently. This ideally includes a summer cut after June and a winter cut but can vary dependent on growth rates and any health & safety concerns raised regarding the highway.
2. How many times per year do you mow your urban road verges, and when?
Anywhere between 4-10 cuts a year from March - October.
3. Do you manage any areas of your road verges for conservation/wildlife specifically, and can you outline the management regime in place if so?
No.
4. Have you consulted with an ecologist or an NGO on how best to manage your road verges?
We have an Ecology Officer who we have discussed verge management with and are aware of the Plantlife Road Verge guidance.
5. Have you altered your verge cutting regime/budget significantly in the last five years? How?
Yes. In 2016 we amended the grass cutting regime leaving a number of verges uncut or cut at the edges as part of an initiative to increase biodiversity. While this received some positive responses, there was a large number of complaints which resulted in the cutting schedule returning the following year to a regular cut on our urban verges with some long grass areas remaining in our parks.
