The Police and Crime Commissioner Elections (Local Returning Officers’ and Police Area Returning Officers’ Charges) Order 2024 sets out how much local authorities can claim for the costs of running these elections.

1. I would like to know how much your local authority claimed from the Government for running the 2024 Police and Crime Commissioner elections or if you do not have a PCC or PFCC, the cost of running the Mayoral elections for your area. If you were not responsible for running the election in your area, please provide a NIL response.
The Returning Officer is not a public authority under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Schedule 1 of the Act, which lists public bodies subject to FOI provisions, does not include persons appointed under the Representation of the People Act 1983. Therefore, the Returning Officer is not subject to FOI obligations. However, we do endeavour to provide a response when appropriate.

The Police and Crime Commissioner Elections (Local Returning Officers' and Police Area Returning Officers' Charges) Order 2024 specifies the maximum recoverable amount that each authority can claim. As the assessment of our submission is still ongoing, we are unable to provide you with the figure at this time.

However, I can advise that Police and Crime Commissioner elections are funded by Central Government, and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) publishes detailed reports on the costs of these elections once all claims have been scrutinised and settled. You may wish to submit your request directly to MHCLG's Elections Claims Unit at FOI@communities.gov.uk, as they hold this information centrally and publish cost data for national polls and PCC elections.
