I am conducting research on long distance care (where family carers travel one hour or more each way to provide care). We searched your website but couldn’t find the information we were looking for. I wondered if you could clarify the following for us:

1. Are long distance carers eligible for a carers assessment and support?
A ‘carer’ means an adult who provides or intends to provide care for another adult. It does not matter where you live. A carer meets the eligibility criteria if their needs are caused by providing necessary care for an adult and as a result: Their physical or mental health is at risk, They are unable to achieve specified outcomes, There is a consequence that there is, or is likely to be, a significant impact on the carer's wellbeing.

2. For a carer to be eligible, do both the carer and the person they care for need to live in your council area; or just the cared for person?
Carer does not need to live in the council area to be entitled to carers assessment.

3. Do you have any specific guidance, protocols, or support for long distance carers?
No, there are no specific guidance or protocols.
