Black History Month (BHM); In January 2021 "Get Reading news" reported a black Wokingham resident complaining at Asians being shown and included in Wokingham Borough Council's BHM as by definition BME is meant for blacks not BME as whole. On Facebook Wokingham Borough Council issued an apology for offending black sensibilities.
1. Who or what post in Wokingham Borough Council issued the apology as a declaration of Wokingham Borough Council's position?
The social media post was not a declaration of WBC position; it was an acknowledgement that some upset had been caused and an apology for having done so. It was issued by the Communications, Engagement and Marketing team and authorised by the team manager.
2. Is it now Wokingham Borough Council policy to have a "BHM" for blacks only as intended by the term or instead have a multicultural month or event for all non black and black ethnic minorities?
The borough’s Black History Month celebrations are planned by the independent BME Forum and delivered in partnership with the borough council. No detailed decisions have yet been taken on how Black History Month will be celebrated in Wokingham Borough in 2021.
