Student discount and exemptions

About student discounts and exemptions

  • Student discount

If some of the people living in a property are full-time students, you may be eligible for a Council Tax discount. 

  • Student exemption

If everyone living in a property is a full-time student, the property is usually exempt from Council Tax, so no payment is required.

Discount eligibility

You may qualify for a student discount if:

  • You’re enrolled full-time at a university or college for at least one academic year, with a minimum of 21 hours per week over 24 weeks.
  • You’re under 20 and studying a further education course for at least 3 months, with a minimum of 12 hours per week. The course must not be via correspondence, job-related, or higher education.
  • You’re a foreign language assistant registered with the British Council and employed by a UK educational institution.
  • No discount: If two or more non-student adults are resident at the property

Evidence you need before apply

To apply, please provide one of the following:

  • A valid Reading University Student ID Number
  • A student certificate showing your name, address, institution, course name, and duration

Apprentice discount

Discount eligibility

You can get an apprentice Council Tax discount if you are:

  • Employed to learn a trade, business, profession, in office or vocational work   
  • Undertaking a programme of training leading to a qualification
  • Earning a salary or in receipt of an allowance or both, which are, in total no more than £195.00 per week

Youth trainee discount

Discount eligibility

You can get a youth trainee Council Tax discount if you are:

  • Under 25 years of age, and
  • Undertaking a course on an approved training scheme such as TCT, Options, Future and Next Step

Student nurse discount

Discount eligibility

If you’re a student nurse taking a course which leads to registration under the Nurses, Midwives and Health visitors Act 1979 then you might be eligible for a Council Tax discount.
