Single person discount
Council Tax discount for single persons
About the single person discount
A single person discount is a reduction in Council Tax for people who live alone in a property. If you are the only adult living in your home, you can usually apply for a 25% discount on your Council Tax bill. This helps make Council Tax more affordable for single residents.
Discount eligibility
To qualify, you must be the only adult (aged 18 or over) living at the address. The property must be your sole or main residence. You're not able to get the discount even if your partner works and lives away from the home for the majority of the time.
About sole or main residence
When establishing whether a property is your sole or main residence we consider the following:
- The number of addresses at which you live at various times and the amount of time spent at each one
- Where you keep most of your possessions
- Whether you own the furniture
- The address at which you're registered for voting and medical purposes
- The sole or main residence of your family

Cancel single person discount
You need to let us know immediately if you're no longer the only person over 18 living in the home, for example if your son or daughter turns 18 or another adult moves in.
Follow the 'Cancel single person discount' link below which will direct you to our Council Tax and Benefits portal homepage. From there, select the ‘Council Tax Discounts’ tab, then ‘Cancel Single person discount’.
Holidays and travelling
Holidays, even long ones, don't change your sole or main residence. If you're intending to return to the address then that means you're not able to get the discount while you're away.
If your partner works away from home
You're not able to get the discount even if your partner works and lives away from the home for the majority of the time.
