Apply for a reduction in Council Tax if you have financial hardship

Section 13A allows us to reduce the Council Tax amount if you have financial hardship due to unforeseen or exceptional circumstances.

There are no pre-set criteria for this discount, each application will be looked at on a case by case basis.

We’ll take into account:

The level of discount being requested – is this for the full year’s Council Tax or part of it
The reason for the request – why is the discount wanted
Period of time the discount is wanted for
Steps that have been taken to meet or mitigate the Council Tax liability

Apply for a discretionary discount

You can apply for a Council Tax Reduction under Section 13A of the Local Government Finance Act 1992.
