A4 footpath repairs
See notes
Footpath repairs along the A4 this summer.
1. Was Wokingham Council responsible for this work
As the local highway authority, Wokingham Borough Council is responsible for the maintenance of all publicly adopted roads, pavements and footpaths within its boundaries. The footway on the northern side of A4 New Bath Road between the A321 Wargrave Road roundabout and the junction with B477 Mumbery Hill is the responsibility of the Council.
2. Why was this work deemed essential
Wokingham Borough Council employs an asset management approach to the maintenance of its highways. More information on this approach is available in Volume 2 (Highway Network Maintenance) of the Wokingham Highways Maintenance Management Plan (HMMP), which can be found here: https://www.wokingham.gov.uk/roads/road-maintenance/highways-maintenance-management-plan
As described in the HMMP, the Council carries out periodic assessments of the engineering condition of all its highways assets, including roads, pavements and footpaths. Assessment of the condition of the footway on the northern side of A4 New Bath Road revealed that its condition was one of the worst in the Borough. It was therefore incorporated in a works programme so that maintenance could be carried out.
3. What did this work cost?
Works on the A4 New Bath Road footway are scheduled to be completed in the early part of 2026. Accordingly, the costs of the works are not available at this time.
