I'm writing with a request information on the topic of abandoned boats.

1. Please provide a copy of your organisation’s policy regarding how you establish that a boat has been abandoned, when your organisation takes responsibility for an abandoned boat, and how you handle the costs of disposal of an abandoned boat.

2. How many boats has your organisation removed and/or disposed of per year since 2015? Please could you provide the data in Calander years.

3. How much money has been spent by your organisation on the removal / disposal of abandoned vessels per year since 2015? Please could you provide the data in Calander years.

Local Authorities do not typically have primary responsibility for inland waterways, and so a policy is not in place for Wokingham Borough Council.

Instead, this responsibility concerning abandoned boats falls to navigation authorities such as:
• The Environment Agency
• The Canal & River Trust

These bodies have statutory powers to remove derelict or sunken boats, when necessary, especially if they pose environmental or navigational risks.
