About the role

This is an interesting volunteer role for anyone who would like to help shape the working arrangements and allowances for local councillors. Panel members would be invited to make recommendations to the Council regarding the Councillor Allowances scheme.

• Volunteers would be appointed for a period of 4 years.
• The first review would take place between July and December 2025 and is likely to require panel members to attend around 5 meetings
• Meetings can be attended in-person at the Council offices or remotely.
• Any expenses incurred to attend meetings will be reimbursed.

The primary role of the Panel will be to review and assess the Councillors’ Allowances scheme on a biennial basis, which includes the basic allowance for all members, the childcare and dependent allowance for all members, and the special responsibility allowances associated with specific roles held by some members.

Exclusions

Volunteers cannot be:

• An elected Councillor of any Local Authority
• Employed or appointed by Wokingham Borough Council
• Are a senior employee (in a politically restricted post) of another local authority
• Are the holder of any position within a political party at local, regional or national level
• Are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order
• Have been convicted in the last 5 years of an offence with a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of not less than 3 months without the option of a fine
• Are in debt to or in dispute with Wokingham Borough Council
• Are a relative or personal friend of an elected Member of Wokingham Borough Council the Panel will consist of one panel member to be appointed for a term of 4 years with the remaining members serving for 3 years.
