Martyn’s Law: A Safer Future for Public Spaces
The UK is taking a significant step forward in protecting public spaces by introducing the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 known as the Protect Duty or Martyn’s Law in memory of Martyn, who lost his life in the Manchester Arena attack
What does this mean for our community?.
What is Martyn’s Law?
The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 ensures that venues and events across the UK implement better security measures to protect visitors and staff from potential threats.
When Will It Come into Force?
📅 3 April 2025 – Martyn’s Law received Royal Assent (official approval).
⏳24-Month Implementation Period – Businesses, local authorities and local community organisations affected will have time to prepare and adapt before the law is fully enforced.
How Will It Affect Local Businesses & Events?
Depending on the size of a venue, safety requirements will vary:
🔹Standard Tier (200-799 people) → Staff training & emergency response planning.
🔹Enhanced Tier (800+ people) → Additional security measures like bag searches, CCTV monitoring, and vehicle checks.
