What are Safe Places
Safe Places is a national scheme that Wokingham Borough has joined. To help you feel more confident going out independently we have asked venues around the borough to sign up and become a Safe Place.
If you feel unsafe, worried, or scared when you are out in town, you can go into a Safe Place. When going to a Safe Place there will be a friendly member of staff who can help by:
- Giving you directions if you are lost or confused on how to get somewhere.
- Giving you a place to wait until you feel better.
- Making a phone call, either to a trusted person or for support.
How to find a Safe Place
Any venue with at least 2 members of staff at all times can be a Safe Place, for example a cafe, gym, shop or library. You find a Safe Place by looking for the ‘Safe Place’ sticker in their window, you can find a picture of the sticker below.

There is a list of Safe Places in Wokingham Borough. There is also a Safe Places App to quickly find the closest one to you when you are out or to plan ahead.
We are regularly adding new Safe Places to the map. Check the list to keep up to date.
Safe Places Card
You can carry a Safe Places Card with you to quickly show staff that you need help. The card is easy to recognise. You can write your name, the name of two trusted contacts and their phone numbers, and there is a space to put any information you think is important (e.g. I have hyperacusis, so I’m sensitive to loud noises).
Cards can be found attached to Safe Places leaflets. You can pick up a leaflet from:
- Wokingham Borough Council reception, Shute End, Wokingham
- Optalis Head Office, Trinity Court, Molly Millars Lane, Wokingham
- The Charity & Community Hub, Erftstadt Court, Denmark Street, Wokingham
- Your local Wokingham Borough Library
- Voluntary and Community Centre hub
Or you can download and print your own card.
How to become a Safe Place
If you are interested in becoming a Safe Place, you can learn more by emailing the Safe Places inbox: safeplacesscheme@wokingham.gov.uk. A member of the team will then follow up to provide further details and support you through the registration process.
