Grey Squirrels

Introduced sometime in the 19th century, the grey squirrel has since spread throughout most of the country.  Problems occur mainly where squirrels gain access to roof spaces where they may cause damage to electrical wiring, insulation, plastic water pipes or other materials. The noise they make can become a real nuisance. Squirrels in the garden, no matter how much damage they may cause, are considered to be in their natural environment.

Some simple tips to avoid squirrels affecting your property:

  • Do not feed squirrels
  • Use squirrel-proof bird feeders
  • Cutting back trees or branches that are overhanging a building, or trimming dense ivy can help prevent squirrels from gaining access to a roof. Please remember not to cut back any trees that are subject to a Tree Preservation Order until the necessary permissions have been obtained by the Councils Planning Department
  • Block access to roof spaces and buildings (after making sure no animals are trapped inside)
  • Purchase sonic repellents for use in attic spaces
