Kinship assessment and support
What happens in an assessment?
If you want to become a formal kinship carer, a social worker will do an assessment. This means they will:
- talk to people who know you to obtain references
- ask for a DBS check (criminal record)
- arrange a health check with a doctor
- gain an understanding of your lived experiences
- assess your ability to care for the child
After the assessment
Once everything is checked and we agree you can be a formal kinship carer, you may get support such as:
- money to help with caring
- information about local kinship support groups
- advice and guidance
- help from a social worker
- training and other services to support your role
