Kinship assessment and support

What happens in an assessment?

If you want to become a formal kinship carer, a social worker will do an assessment. This means they will:

  • talk to people who know you to obtain references
  • ask for a DBS check (criminal record)
  • arrange a health check with a doctor
  • gain an understanding of your lived experiences
  • assess your ability to care for the child

After the assessment

Once everything is checked and we agree you can be a formal kinship carer, you may get support such as:

  • money to help with caring
  • information about local kinship support groups
  • advice and guidance
  • help from a social worker
  • training and other services to support your role
