SHINE: Activities for people over 55
SHINE Programme Transition - March 2024
From 2 April 2024, SHINE will be transferring and classes delivered by Places Leisure. You will be able to attend the current SHINE classes until Thursday 28 March 2024.
The SHINE programme in its current form will stop. However, we have extended and developed the current Places Leisure offer to incorporate some SHINE classes. This will increase the value for members who will be able to access all classes, gym, and swim as part of their membership.
This change means that classes fall into 4 categories:
1. Classes will continue as they are
2. Change in venue and/or time
3. Classes will stop and members signposted to an alternative
4. Classes will be moved under the Active Ageing bracket and will continue in the interim
Places Leisure membership offer:
- 220 + 14 classes moving from SHINE to Places Leisure across 6 sites
- Access to swim sessions between 6am to 4pm and 6pm to 103.0pm
- Access to the gym across 6 sites for 108 hours per site per week
Options for existing SHINE members
Existing SHINE members will have the following options:
1. Join Places Leisure immediately:
a. You will no longer attend SHINE classes
b. You can sign up to Places Leisure online or by visiting your local Leisure Centre
c. Email SHINE@wokingham.gov.uk or call 0118 974 3728 for Sport and Leisure to process your refund
d. You can now attend Places Leisure classes
2. Leave SHINE immediately:
a. You will no longer attend SHINE classes
b. Email SHINE@wokingham.gov.uk or call 0118 974 3728 for Sport and Leisure to process your refund
3. Continue to attend classes, then join Places Leisure:
a. Continue to attend SHINE classes booked through Glofox until 28 March 2024
b. You can sign up to Places Leisure online or by visiting your local Leisure Centre
c. From the week commencing 2 April all outstanding credits will be refunded
d. Continue to attend Places Leisure classes, gym and swim
4. Continue to attend classes and do not join Places Leisure
a. Continue to attend SHINE classes booked through Glofox until 28 March 2024
b. From the week commencing 2 April all outstanding credits will be refunded
Join Places Leisure
We recommend that all existing and prospective SHINE members join Places Leisure, as follows:
- Visit the Places Leisure website
- Select ‘I’m New...’ - this will be an online form to complete which will register your details. If your email address is recognised, please select ‘I’m a Member’ to set up your online account
- Once you’ve created your account ‘Log In’ and you’ll come a profile page
- Select ‘Membership Options’
- Add ‘Places Membership’ to your basket – this is a free of charge membership option
- Once you’ve completed the transaction, you’ll receive an email confirmation that you’ve successfully registered
- From the same homepage (above) you can select ‘Book Now’ to book onto any activity that we have available

Currently all classes will be available until 28 March 2024 at £4.60 each.
