Identity
Criminal use of another’s identity resulting in legal offenses
When another person uses your details for identity theft it is not a recordable offence. However, using another person’s identity to commit a crime is and offence.
Usually if your details have been stolen you won’t lose money, it is often a business who suffers a financial loss. However, victims of identity theft can suffer anxiety and stress caused by sorting the situation out and contacting companies the criminal has used to obtain items or services.
Examples of fraud using identity theft:
- Your name/ address / date of birth are used to open up a catalogue account where goods are purchased using your details
- Your personal details are used to take out a loan
- Your photo is used in a forged driving licence and used as ID, along with your name and address to buy a mobile phone contract
If your details have been stolen it is advisable to do your own credit checks to see if any other accounts have been taken out in your name.
