Walking signage
See notes
1. I would like to know the cost of the walking signage recently erected to the east of Wokingham. Around the Keepatch Road area, Keephatch woods and the northern relief road, some of these signs are incorrect (walking distance) and why are they there? If there is a very good reason it would be useful to know that there is not an A&E department at Wokingham Hospital.
The signs form part of a pedestrian and cycle wayfinding scheme. The final cost is currently being confirmed as our contractor is yet to submit their final invoice; however, the current estimated cost for the scheme is £41,264.28. The scheme has been fully funded through developer contributions (Section 106 funding), rather than from core council budgets. This funding was specifically secured for this purpose and must therefore be used for this otherwise the funding would need to be returned to the developer.
The wayfinding scheme is designed to support and encourage walking and cycling. The signs provide information on directions and distances to key local destinations, including the town centre, transport hubs, green spaces, and local community facilities.
We are aware that some signing in the Keephatch area contains inaccuracies, including errors in distances. We are very disappointed that inaccuracies have been identified following installation and are reflecting upon this. We are in the process of investigating what may have occurred and are reviewing all the signs to confirm correct destinations, routes, and distances to identify the precise changes that are required on site.
Wokingham Hospital has been included as a destination on the signing as it is a recognised local facility used by patients, visitors, and staff. While it does not contain an Accident & Emergency department, it provides a range of healthcare services accessed by appointment and is therefore considered a relevant and important destination within the local walking and cycling network.
