1. How many trees did you plant in the 2024/25 season (circa October 2024-March 2025)?
During the 2024-2025 planting season approximately 13k trees were planted across approximately 14 hectares of land. However, since 2021 – present the Council has planted a total of approximately 60k trees across 33ha of land, in support of the Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan.

2. How many survived?
Based on the replanting rates since the tree planting project started in 2021, the Council has observed good success rates on most of our sites which suggests most of them have achieved around an 85% success rate.

3. What was the maintenance regime for newly planted trees?
Maintenance was focussed on planting during the right periods, tailoring tree species to the ground conditions to ensure maximum success and establishment, pre-planting ground preparation and weed control such as mulching around the planting area in order to retain moisture and nutrients. During particularly hot and dry spells watering regimes have been implemented.

4. What caused the trees that died to perish?
When planting on scale there is an expectation that a failure rate of 25% is likely and therefore the current re-planting rates that the Council has observed is positive. The primary cause of tree failure on these sites has been due to prolonged hot and dry periods where watering regimes become unsustainable to maintain.
