What's going to change

A summary of the changes we're making

  • We’ll be delivering your new black wheeled rubbish bin at some point in late spring 2024. We’ll ask you to start using it from August 2024, replacing the current blue bag system for most properties

  • We’ll then start emptying your wheeled bin every fortnight, instead of the weekly bag collections, to help us reduce our borough’s environmental impact and make essential savings
  • Your wheeled bin will hold 180 litres, about two full blue bags’ worth of rubbish. You may need to recycle more or reduce your waste as we’ll only take one full bin per collection
  • We’ll also be collecting your recycling from your usual green bags every other week, on the weeks when we don’t empty your wheeled rubbish bin
  • Your food waste collection will remain weekly and the optional garden waste collections will remain fortnightly.

Example collection schedule (from August 2024)

What your weekly bins will look like

When your bin will arrive, and what happens next

We’ll be delivering wheeled rubbish bins from late May in 2024, and it will take several months to deliver to every household. You must not use this straight away, as it will not be emptied before wheeled bin collections start in August.

We’ll provide more information about your revised collection dates before the wheeled bin collections start, and these dates will also be available on our website

You’ll need to check your rubbish collection day, which we’ll clearly publicise, as this may change once we switch to the fortnightly schedule. We won’t empty your bin if it’s put out on the wrong day or week.

Until wheeled bin collections start, you should continue putting your rubbish out in your blue bags as normal. We'll be delivering 20 blue bags to households in February and March 2024 to keep you going until your collections change.

Once we’ve started collecting wheeled bins, we will not collect any rubbish that isn’t inside the bin. The bin lid must also be fully closed.

As with your blue bags, the wheeled bins must only contain non-recyclable household rubbish. There's a list of what we will and won’t accept in recycling bags on our website, which also has links to all our rubbish and recycling services

Don't worry - there’ll be enough room in the bin for your rubbish if you follow our simple guidance on reducing waste and recycling more.
