How to apply for travel assistance

If your child is starting school in September

If your child is eligible, you should apply for travel assistance as soon as your child’s school place is confirmed and before 31 May.

If your application is successful, travel assistance for your child will be in place at the start of the autumn term in September.

If you apply after 31 May and later in the summer, travel arrangements may not be in place for the start of the autumn term.

If you are applying after September

We will do our best to have travel arrangements in place but we cannot guarantee this will be in place by the start of the Autumn term in September.

How we assess applications

Our transport panel meets every 2 weeks, or more regularly if necessary, to consider all travel assistance applications. The panel members consist of:

  • a SEND transport officer
  • a SEND team manager
  • a community transport officer
  • anyone else who we feel can help make a decision, for example, an educational psychologist

We will assess eligibility on a case-by-case basis, and take into account:

  • the child’s physical ability to walk to school
  • any health and safety issues related to their SEND or mobility problems
  • whether they would be able to walk to school even if they were accompanied

If your application is approved, transport arrangements will be confirmed within 10 working days.

If your application is unsuccessful

We will give you the reasons why and provide information on how you can appeal our decision.
