North Wokingham Distributor Road

North Wokingham Distributor Road

Why we're building a North Wokingham Distributor Road

About 4,000 new homes are set to be built in Wokingham town by 2026 as part of our Local Plan. The North Wokingham Distributor Road (NWDR) provides access to new housing in the North Wokingham area and helps to minimise the impact of increased traffic.

The video below showcases work plans for parts of the North Wokingham Distributor Road and adjacent Winnersh Relief Road. Both are part of our multi-million pound Major New Roads project.

Project overview

The North Wokingham Distributor Road (NWDR) consists of seven separate schemes, four of which are led by developers building new housing in the area (Bell Foundry LaneMatthewsgreenKentwood Farm and Keephatch Beech) and three which we are delivering (West of Old Forest Road (WOFR), Toutley Road and Ashridge Farm).

The NWDR connects the A329 near the BP garage on Reading Road with the A329(M) Reading to Bracknell motorway near the Coppid Beech roundabout junction. It also provides a link from Winnersh to the A329(M) avoiding Wokingham town centre.

The NWDR provides access to the developments at Matthewsgreen, Kentwood Farm and Keephatch Beech and offers these areas convenient, direct access to the motorway network via both the A329 (M) and the M4.

The West of Old Forest Road  (WOFTR) and Toutley Road phases of the NWDR opened to traffic on 9 May 2022, linking the A329 Reading Road to Toutley Road.

Consultation on the route

In September and October 2013 we consulted on routes for the North Wokingham Distributor Road. We received about 1,500 responses, one of the highest numbers we've ever received during a consultation.

We collected lots of useful information and there was a clear public preference for Alternative B. Following some suggestions and concerns raised by the consultation on 27 March 2014, our Executive approved funding for further technical studies.

We refined the design detail of Alternative B to take account of these comments and presented this to the Executive in September 2015.
