Bikeability Cycle Training

We have introduced Bikeability training at many primary schools and some secondary schools in the Borough. We also run Bikeability courses in the school Easter and Summer holidays.

Bikeability is the 'cycling proficiency' for the 21st century - the scheme that gives children the skills and confidence they need to cycle in modern road conditions. It has been developed by Cycling England and the Department for Transport and is underpinned by the Government's National Standard for Cycle Training. For further information visit the Bikeability website.

Bikeability cycle training helps children gain the skills and confidence needed to ride on roads. Check out some specially produced videos.

Who can join the cycle training scheme?

Children must be 10 years old before August 31, 2012 to take part and must attend training with a roadworthy bike and a properly fitting cycle helmet.

  • Bikeability Level 1 training begins off-road, away from traffic (in a playground or closed car park area).  Trainees learn to control and master their bikes.  They then move onto local roads for Level 2 training, which gives them a real cycling experience, so that they are able to deal with traffic on short journeys, such as cycling to school.
  • Trainees will be provided with literature for home study.  At the end of the course trainees will be assessed and awarded badges and certificates as appropriate.
  • Holiday cycling courses are led by qualified National Standard Cycle Instructors, who have all had recent CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checks.

British rowing champion and double Olympic gold medalist James Cracknell made a short film about wearing a helmet when cycling after he was seriously injured in a cycling accident in America. His helmet saved him. Visit the Youtube website to watch the film.

Think Ahead, Think for Everyone

In 2009 cyclists cycled over 3.1 billion miles and as fuel and transport costs increase, more people are getting on their bikes. On today's busy roads cyclists are competing for road space with buses, cars, lorries, motorbikes and many other vehicles and it is a sad statistic that on average there are 24 cyclist deaths a year involving large goods vehicles (LGVs).

Over the last 7 years Cemex UK has been working to help support its drivers so that they aren't involved in incidents with cyclists and for the last 2 years, with cyclists to educate them about safe cycling around large vehicles.
