Child Road Safety

Tales of the Road Campaign for 6-11 year old children

Child pedestrians are among those vulnerable road users who are most at risk of injuring themselves.  Training children to understand and use the Green Cross Code correctly is an essential part of ensuring they learn to use the roads safely as they begin to travel independently.  Road traffic data indicates that “crossing road masked by stationary or parked vehicles” and “failed to look properly” are among the biggest contributory factors reported for child pedestrian casualties.  In 2010 in the UK 10 child pedestrians were killed and 675 seriously injured.  Good road safety behaviour needs to be practiced at all times and 6-11 year olds need to understand the consequences of poor road safety behaviour, as well as the positive solution.

To help you reinforce the following road safety messages with your children the Tales of the Road campaign, produced by Think! from the Department for Transport is there to help:

  • Find the safest place to cross the road
  • Stop, look and listen at the kerb and when the road is clear cross (looking and listening as you go)
  • Wear fluorescent clothing during the daytime and reflective at night so road users can see you

Be seen with a helmet and armbands

The road safety team sell a hi-vis flashing armband for £2 that can be worn over the sleeve of a winter coat. We also sell cycle helmets at £8.  Use our helmet order form to order your cycle helmet and reflective arm bands.

Teaching aids and road safety shows

We loan out a variety of teaching aids to schools and nurseries as well as providing talks and resources. These include a zebra crossing mat, a child's lollipop outfit and sign, books, games, Streetfeet - includes roads, signs and role play tabards. We also run a road safety show, teaching children how to use different types of crossings, how to cross with a school crossing patroller and the importance of wearing a cycle helmet.

If your school is interested in having a road safety show or want to borrow a teaching aid, contact our Road Safety Officer.

School Crossing Patrol Service

We provide school crossing patrollers at 25 sites. This helps ensure a safer journey for children and adults walking to and from school.
