Doorstep safety

Bogus callers

People may be ringing your doorbell for a number of reasons, however you should be aware that some of the people on your doorstep may be bogus callers (sometimes called doorstep thieves).

Bogus callers trick their way into people’s homes with the intention of stealing people’s money or belongings. They will invent an emergency (e.g. a road accident) or pretend to represent an official organisation.

How to increase your safety

Most official companies will send you a letter first and you can ask your gas, water or electricity supplier to give you a unique password for additional security.

If you are in any doubt about the person on your doorstep then follow the link to 'safety advice' and read some simple information that you may be able to use to increase your safety.

Bogus workmen

Bogus workmen may be knocking on your door to persuade you to carry out repairs or maintenance on your home. They may appear very experienced and convincing, however to ensure your personal safety always:

  • Tell them that you need to get quotes from other companies
  • Use a reputable company
  • Never pay upfront for anything
