General information

ASTs are teachers who have demonstrated excellent all-round abilities in their roles.  They spend 80% of their time in teaching their own classes and work with the Local Authority for one day a week to work with other classroom practitioners, providing a range of opportunities to share effective practice and to support wider professional development.  Outreach particularly provides an important means whereby the AST can support priorities identified in the LA's strategic plans and help raise standards in their own and other schools and have an impact on the wider community.

ASTs are able to provide support such as:

  • leading or supporting training and development and school-based consultancy coaching
  • providing focused support in schools in difficult circumstances
  • developing curriculum materials and contributing to publications
  • supporting experiential classroom research projects
  • working with clusters of schools to develop and disseminate good and innovative practice
  • supporting educational inclusion
  • supporting transition processes
  • helping trainee teacher and NQTs
  • holding workshops
  • providing model lessons
  • advising other teachers on pedagogical matters, including the productive use of ICT and new technologies
